Hi. I'm Brad...

....and I've been drawing, painting and designing my whole life. Paintings, portraits, comics, posters, t-shirt design...I've pretty much done it all. For the last 18 years, however, I have been an art faculty member at Mid-Michigan College. I teach drawing, illustration and graphic design. And, after receiving my MFA in 2017, was named as full-time faculty and department advisor. All the while still creating comics and stories for both print and the web.

Okay, I'm not as serious as this photo makes me look, just ask my students...I'm just not very good at taking selfies.

Storyboarding and Sequential Art at Mid-Michigan College

This is an example of the comic book anthology we publish periodically. All work is done by students of the ART 206 Storyboarding and Sequential Art class.
Soon after I began teaching drawing at MMC I was approached by the head of the Art department about creating a Comic Book Illustration class. After creating a curriculum and going through committee after committee to convince them of it's merit MMC became the only community college in Michigan to offer comic book illustration.  And almost as long as the MMC Storyboarding and Sequential Art Class has been around we have been publishing student work. We recently published the seventh volume of our anthology, Mid-Riff!.

Studio Photos...

My wife and I recently purchased a beautiful Mid-Century Modern house in Central Michigan. The best part for me is the huge lower floor, which I have turned into my studio. It's got plenty of light and tons of space, which even allows for a lounge area.
If you look closely in the studio photos below you can see quite a collection of vintage toys including all 3 models of 1930's Buck Rogers ray guns next the three shelves in the corner.

I think that it is important to surround yourself with art that you admire. As a comic artist I do so with pieces of original comic strip art I have collected over the years. Among these are a 1979 Buck Rogers strip by Gray Morrow (Below), a 1979 Starhawks strip by Gil Kane (Below Left), a 1950 Captain Easy Strip by Leslie Turner (Below Right) and a 1942 Barney Baxter strip by Frank Miller (Below Center).

I even have a makeshift studio within my office at Mid-Michigan College. I use a portable drawing board with a built-in straight edge and small lighted diopter. I also have original comic art in my office. Below is an original 1977 Flash Gordon strip by Dan Barry and Bob Fujutani, a signed Flash Gordon print by on of my artistic heroes Al Williamson, and a hand color print by legendary comic strip artist Milton Caniff.
